Dong-gu newly installed art signboards at 17 businesses around the Art Street intersection, creating a distinctive signboard street. The project was carried out to move away from uniform, primary color-based commercial signboards and instead introduce three-dimensional art signboards that reflect the characteristics and sensibilities of each business, thereby improving the street landscape. The significance of this project lies in reinterpreting signboards not just as commercial markers but as public design elements that embody the culture and art of the street.
Since 2023, Dong-gu has been working in collaboration with the Gwangju Design Center Foundation and the Art Street Merchants Association to establish a cooperative system aimed at developing comprehensive improvement measures for revitalizing Art Street. Throughout this process, continuous discussions have been held regarding the direction of spatial design and the identification of future linked projects, laying the foundation for phased landscape improvement initiatives.
Starting in May this year, Dong-gu invested a total project budget of 126 million won to fully launch the art signboard support project for businesses on Art Street. In particular, local artists participated in the entire process of developing and producing the signboard designs, resulting in various forms of art signboards that highlight the business type and individuality of each establishment.
Through this pilot project, Dong-gu expects to see a range of ripple effects, including expanding opportunities for local artists to participate, strengthening the identity of Art Street, increasing the influx of younger generations, and revitalizing the local commercial district. The district anticipates that this will become a successful case of local, customized landscape improvement where art, commerce, and public design are harmoniously integrated.
A Dong-gu official stated, "We are transforming the old downtown streets from simple passageways into spaces where people want to stay and return. Moving forward, we will continue to work closely with the merchants association to gradually promote sustainable street revitalization and landscape improvement, breathing new life into the region."

Meanwhile, the "Chungjang-ro 5-ga Signboard Improvement Project," which Dong-gu has been implementing since April last year, is also nearing completion, with the goal of finishing by the end of January next year. Once completed, the approximately 1,093-meter section from Chungjang-ro 1-ga to 5-ga is expected to be recognized as an exemplary case of signboard maintenance.
