Yeosu City Finalizes Names of Renewed Mascots as 'Janggun-i' and 'Odong-i'
Official Names Finalized After Final Review
Yeosu City in South Jeolla Province announced that it has finalized the official names of its renewed mascots as 'Janggun-i' and 'Odong-i'.
The selection of these names was part of the process to update the existing mascots 'Gooni' and 'Gooki' in line with changing times, and to assign names suitable for the new designs.
From October 22 to 31, Yeosu City held a mascot naming contest, receiving a total of 1,024 submissions. The city then conducted a preference survey among citizens and employees for the shortlisted candidates selected through departmental and expert reviews. Based on the survey results, the Yeosu City Policy Coordination Committee made the final decision on the names.
The new names reflect regional symbols: one character wearing a helmet represents Admiral Yi Sun-sin, a symbol of Yeosu, while the other, adorned with camellia flowers, evokes Odongdo Island.
Throughout December, Yeosu City plans to sequentially carry out promotional events, including the distribution of Janggun-i and Odong-i KakaoTalk emoticons and the installation of air sculptures on the city hall lawn. The mascots will also be used in various city promotions, including the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo.
