ID Verification and Payment at Once... Three Major Mobile Carriers Launch New PASS App Service Starting Today
'PASS ID Payment' Service
Launched at GS25 Convenience Stores Nationwide Starting December 1
On December 1, SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus, the three major mobile carriers, announced the launch of the 'PASS ID Payment' service, which allows users to verify their ID and make payments simultaneously.
Previously, when purchasing products that require age verification, such as alcohol or cigarettes, at convenience stores or unmanned vending machines, customers had to present their ID to confirm their age and then proceed with payment separately.
With the PASS ID Payment service, users can register their resident registration card (or driver's license) and credit card in the PASS application, and complete both age verification and payment at once by scanning a QR code.
The 15 million customers already using the PASS ID verification service can use the new service immediately by simply adding a credit card, without the need to install a separate app.
This service is also expected to be beneficial for small business owners. If they sell alcohol or cigarettes to minors without properly verifying IDs, they may face legal penalties such as business suspension. With this new service, the results of ID verification (including electronically recorded verification history) can be submitted as supporting evidence.
The service will be fully introduced at GS25 convenience stores nationwide starting December 1 through cooperation with GS Retail, and will also be available at unmanned cigarette vending machines installed by Beaverworks across the country.
The adult verification and payment data entered are encrypted and securely transmitted to GS25 via NICE Information & Telecommunication, a value-added network (VAN) provider. NICE Information & Telecommunication is the first VAN provider to collaborate with the three major mobile carriers to support stable ID payment services.
