National Tax Card Payment Fee to Be Reduced by 0.1%P From December 2... 16 Billion Won Relief Expected
National Tax Service Aims to Support Livelihood Economy
First Fee Reduction in Seven Years Since 2018
Starting from December 2 next month, the fee for paying national taxes by card will be reduced by 0.1 percentage points. This measure aims to support small business owners and micro-enterprises facing management difficulties due to the economic downturn, as part of efforts to aid the livelihood economy.
The National Tax Service announced on the 25th that the reduction in national tax payment agency fees will take effect from December 2, 2025.
The National Tax Service, after consultations with credit card companies and the Korea Financial Telecommunications & Clearings Institute, decided and approved a plan to lower the national tax payment fee rate in August. Subsequently, after system upgrades by the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Korea Financial Telecommunications & Clearings Institute, the relevant public notice by the National Tax Service Commissioner was revised on October 31.
An official from the National Tax Service explained, "This reduction in credit card and debit card payment fees is the first in about seven years, following the reduction of credit card payment fees in 2016 and debit card payment fees in 2018," adding, "Despite the challenging economic conditions, including the economic downturn, the card industry agreed with the aim of supporting small business owners and micro-enterprises and reduced the fees as much as possible."
The national tax payment fee rate will be uniformly reduced by 0.1 percentage points, regardless of taxpayer or tax item. For value-added tax and comprehensive income tax-which are closely related to the business and livelihood of micro-enterprises-the fee will be reduced by 0.4 percentage points for credit card payments and by 0.35 percentage points for debit card payments, resulting in a 50% reduction in the fee rate for credit card payments.
The payment fee rates, which apply separately to individuals and businesses, can be checked individually on the National Tax Service's Hometax website after logging in, starting December 2.
As of last year, there were approximately 4.28 million cases of national tax payments by card, amounting to about 19 trillion won. The fees paid by taxpayers totaled around 150 billion won, and with the fee rate reduction, an estimated 16 billion won in fee relief is expected for credit card payments. The National Tax Service expects that the burden on taxpayers who pay national taxes by card, often due to temporary cash flow issues, will be alleviated.
