During the briefing, the project's core vision, 'Gimpo Urban Eco-RE:um,' was unveiled. Through this initiative, Gimpo City aims to restore polluted environments and expand renewable energy infrastructure to build a city with a foundation for carbon neutrality. In particular, the plan includes the creation of an RE100 industrial complex that maximizes the use of renewable energy, thereby achieving both environmental benefits and industrial competitiveness.
Additionally, to address climate change, the city will restore waterfronts and wetlands, expand green spaces, and establish a resilient, water-friendly urban environment. A model for a live-work-play complex city linked to a metropolitan public transportation network was also presented. By creating a self-sufficient structure where industry, housing, and culture are interconnected within a single space, Gimpo City seeks to enhance citizen convenience and urban functionality.
The Korea Water Resources Corporation will be responsible for implementing the project, working in cooperation with Gimpo City and the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment. The project is especially anticipated as a sustainable urban model that addresses unplanned development while balancing environmental and economic considerations.
In August, Gimpo City emphasized the necessity of the project and the justification for government support during meetings with the Minister of Environment and other relevant ministries. The Ministry of Environment also agreed that this project could serve as a model case for environmental improvement and urban regeneration nationwide, and has continued working-level consultations and strategic coordination since then.
Kim Byungsoo, Mayor of Gimpo City, stated, "The Gimpo Environmental Regeneration Innovation Complex is a core project encompassing community recovery and future growth engines," adding, "Gimpo City, the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, and the Korea Water Resources Corporation will establish a new standard for exemplary environmental cities here in Gimpo."
Following this briefing, the city plans to review its administrative support system and accelerate the transition to the project’s licensing and implementation phases. In addition, Gimpo City will continue to systematically promote the project in connection with its future urban development strategy.
