The meeting was arranged by Kim Yongbeom, Director of Policy Office at the Presidential Office, and attended by Kim Youngrok, Governor of Jeollanam-do Province, Kang Kijeong, Mayor of Gwangju Metropolitan City, and Kim San, Mayor of Muan County.
This meeting served as a preliminary consultation for the “six-party consultative body on military airport relocation led by the Presidential Office,” which the President promised during the Gwangju-Jeonnam town hall meeting in June. The participants discussed the issues raised by each institution and shared their respective positions on key matters.
The main issues regarding the integrated relocation were discussed extensively, and the representatives of each local government exchanged candid opinions on their positions.
As a result of the preliminary consultation, the Presidential Office and the three local governments reached a broad consensus on the government’s mediation plan. They agreed to officially launch the six-party consultative body as soon as possible, aiming for December.
In particular, they agreed to actively pursue the establishment of advanced industrial infrastructure, including a national industrial complex, to promote the development of Muan County. They also made progress in discussions on securing funding for a 1 trillion won resident support project and relocating Gwangju’s civilian airport in line with the opening of the second phase of the Honam High-Speed Railway.
This four-party preliminary consultation achieved meaningful results in discussions on integrated relocation, which had previously made little progress due to various complex challenges. It is expected to significantly contribute to building public acceptance and spreading positive public opinion regarding the relocation initiative.
