This week, the heads of major LG Group affiliates will meet with Ola Kallenius, Chairman of Mercedes-Benz, who is visiting South Korea. During this meeting, the two companies are expected to strengthen their collaboration in the electric and electronic vehicle components (vehicle electronics) business.
According to the business community on November 12, Kallenius will meet with the CEOs of major LG Group affiliates at the LG Twin Towers in Yeouido, Seoul, on the afternoon of November 13. The meeting is expected to be attended by Cho Joo Wan, CEO of LG Electronics; Kim Dong Myung, CEO of LG Energy Solution; Chung Cheol Dong, CEO of LG Display; and Moon Hyuk Soo, CEO of LG Innotek. They are expected to discuss concrete cooperation in the software-defined vehicle (SDV) sector, including the supply of key components for vehicle electronics such as batteries, displays, and sensors.
This is not the first meeting between Kallenius and the heads of LG Group. About a year and a half ago, in March last year, Kallenius met with the CEOs of major LG affiliates during a private "Tech Day" event in Germany, further solidifying their partnership. At the time, Kallenius posted on his social networking service (SNS) account, "After this meeting with LG, my expectations for the future have grown even greater. Mercedes-Benz aims to provide customers with an outstanding digital product experience, and I am confident that together with our strong partner LG, we will once again raise the bar with next-generation products."
Kallenius is also expected to meet with Cho Hyun Sang, Vice Chairman and CEO of HS Hyosung. HS Hyosung The Class, one of HS Hyosung's affiliates, is an official dealer for Mercedes-Benz. In addition, it is reported that Kallenius will meet with Lee Jae Yong, Chairman of Samsung Electronics, to discuss collaboration in the vehicle electronics business. Choi Joo Sun, President of Samsung SDI, and Lee Cheong, President of Samsung Display, are also rumored to be attending this meeting.
Industry observers believe that these meetings between the chairmen could expand the scope of collaboration between the companies to include semiconductors, batteries, and displays. Currently, Samsung and Mercedes-Benz are cooperating in areas such as in-vehicle infotainment systems and digital keys. It is also reported that discussions are underway regarding the supply of vehicle OLEDs. The Device Solutions (DS) division, which is responsible for Samsung Electronics' semiconductor business, and Samsung SDI currently supply automotive semiconductors and electric vehicle batteries to global automakers such as BMW and Audi, but have not yet established a partnership with Mercedes-Benz.
