After Summit Falls Through, US Imposes Sanctions on North Korea... Pyongyang Protests "Malicious Nature Revealed"
After the North Korea-US summit, which was scheduled to take place on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting, fell through, the US government imposed a series of additional sanctions on North Korea, prompting a backlash from Pyongyang.
On November 6, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) released a statement by Kim Eun-chol, Vice Foreign Minister in charge of US affairs, saying, “The US’s malicious nature, intent on remaining hostile to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) until the end, has been revealed once again without any filter.” He continued, “The latest unilateral sanctions against North Korea, which have been imposed for the fifth time since the new US administration took office, mark a decisive moment that puts an end to speculation and public opinion about a possible shift in US policy toward North Korea.” He repeatedly emphasized, “With this, the US administration has clearly demonstrated its unwavering stance of hostility toward our country.”
Vice Minister Kim further stated, “The United States should not harbor any expectations or lingering hopes that its unique tactics-filled with pressure, appeasement, threats, and intimidation-will eventually bear fruit when dealing with our country.” He added, “Just as in the past, US sanctions will have no impact whatsoever on our perspective and approach toward the United States, now or in the future.” He went on to stress, “Since the current US administration has made its hostile stance toward us clear, we too will respond accordingly with patience for as long as necessary.”

US President Donald Trump has continued to send overtures to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, expressing his willingness to resume dialogue between the two countries. However, North Korea has not responded, and the US administration has recently implemented unilateral sanctions against Pyongyang. On November 4 (local time), the US Department of the Treasury newly designated eight North Korean nationals and two North Korea-based institutions involved in laundering proceeds from the regime’s cybercrimes as targets of sanctions. The previous day, the US Department of State also announced its intention to seek United Nations sanctions on six third-country vessels involved in exporting North Korean coal and iron ore to China.
