Ahead of the Summit, U.S. and China Hold Talks: "At a Stage for a Productive Meeting"
On the occasion of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Gyeongju, a summit meeting between the United States and China is scheduled to take place, with the chief trade negotiators from both countries meeting in Malaysia to continue their discussions.
According to major foreign media outlets on the 26th, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Besant told reporters after concluding the bilateral trade delegation meeting held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, that a "very successful" framework had been established for the upcoming U.S.-China summit. Secretary Besant and Jamison Greer, Chief Representative of the U.S. Trade Representative, held talks with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng and others on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) meeting.
Greer, who also participated in the negotiations, told reporters that discussions with the Chinese side included the extension of the trade truce and the issue of rare earth elements, stating, "I believe that the leaders (of the U.S. and China) are reaching a stage where they can have a very productive summit."
Since the beginning of this year, the U.S. and China have held high-level trade talks and continued negotiations in Geneva, Switzerland (May), London, United Kingdom (June), Stockholm, Sweden (July), and Madrid, Spain (September). This latest high-level meeting was held over two days, as the U.S.-China summit between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping is scheduled to take place in Korea.
