Dalseong County's "Dasa Square" Wins Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award at Korea Landscape Awards
2,500 Square Meters Park Established in 2007
Remodeled Last Year with 1.8 Billion Won Investment
Dalseong County in Daegu (Governor Choi Jaehoon) announced on the 26th that "Dasa Square" has received the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award in the public sector at the "15th Korea Landscape Awards 2025."
The "Korea Landscape Awards" is an annual award in the field of landscape architecture, co-hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Foundation for Environmental Landscape Development, which recognizes outstanding landscape spaces each year. The selection process for award recipients is rigorous and thorough. Only projects that have proven their excellence through the first stage of document evaluation, the second stage of on-site inspection, and finally a public participation assessment, are honored with the award.
Dasa Square, located in Maegok-ri, Dasa-eup, Dalseong County, Daegu, is situated in a key commercial district adjacent to Daesil Station on Daegu Metro Line 2. Since its creation in 2007, the space had become outdated and neglected, resulting in a gloomy atmosphere. However, with this recent remodeling, it has been honored with the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award, gaining recognition for its renewed value.
In 2024, Dalseong County invested 1.8 billion won of county funds to remodel a large area of 2,500 square meters, including the square and pedestrian walkways. Dasa Square was reborn as a space where exotic and uniquely Korean beauty coexist, with the introduction of porphyry stone paving, ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) sculptural benches, and LED lighting installed on the ground and seating walls.
The core of the remodeling was the bold departure from traditional landscaping methods and the adoption of innovative materials. In particular, porphyry stone and ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) are rarely used in public landscaping, and their application in construction has dramatically enhanced both the design and quality of the space. In addition, the design, tailored to local characteristics through resident participation, received high praise.
Currently, after the remodeling, Dasa Square has established itself as a venue for various cultural events and is being recognized as a model for the future direction of urban squares.
