"Discovering Korean Painting Artists Nationwide"... Gwangju Bank Hosts Gwangju Hwaryu Contest
Gwangju Bank announced on October 1 that it will hold the "9th Gwangju Hwaryu Contest" for Korean painting artists nationwide.
Launched in 2017 and now in its ninth year, the "Gwangju Hwaryu" is the largest Korean painting contest in the country. Each year, the contest discovers talented Korean painting artists, offering them prize money and exhibition opportunities. It is a flagship cultural program of Gwangju Bank, which has led new trends in Korean painting. In particular, it provides a springboard for emerging artists to pursue creative activities and expands opportunities for local residents to enjoy Korean painting, thereby fostering cultural pride in the region.
The judging process consists of three stages: the first round portfolio review, the second round artwork evaluation, and the third round in-depth interview. A total of 10 winners will be selected: one Grand Prize winner (30 million KRW), one First Prize winner (20 million KRW), three Excellence Award winners (10 million KRW each), and five Honorable Mention winners (2 million KRW each), with a total prize pool of 90 million KRW.
The winning works will be exhibited at the "Gwangju Hwaryu Ten Artists Exhibition" to be held at the Gwangju Bank Art Hall in the first half of next year. The exhibition is expected to serve as a venue for artistic exchange, where visitors can appreciate Korean paintings that blend tradition and modernity. Online applications will be accepted through the Gwangju Hwaryu website from October 23 to 30.
