Hoengseong County Selected for Smart Horticulture Complex Infrastructure Project
County Secures 2.469 Billion Won in National Funding
Dunnae Highland Tomato Competitiveness Expected to Strengthen
Hoengseong County in Gangwon Province announced on September 25 that it has been finally selected for the "2026 Smart Horticulture Complex Infrastructure Development Project," organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, securing 2.469 billion won in national funding.
The Smart Horticulture Complex Infrastructure Development Project aims to enhance management efficiency by consolidating and scaling up small, scattered facility horticulture businesses. It selects and intensively fosters core hubs of facility horticulture to strengthen competitiveness in both domestic and international markets.
Last month, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs conducted on-site inspections and face-to-face evaluations, reviewing the project's feasibility, site selection suitability, and planning validity. As a result, four locations were finally selected: Hoengseong in Gangwon Province, Boeun in North Chungcheong Province, Nonsan in South Chungcheong Province, and Haenam in South Jeolla Province.
This project marks Hoengseong County's first large-scale smart farm infrastructure development case. It will support the construction of essential infrastructure for smart farms, including road repairs, maintenance of irrigation and drainage channels, electricity supply, and installation of communications (internet). Of the total project cost of 3.527 billion won, 2.469 billion won (71%) will come from national funds, 317.4 million won from the provincial government, and 740.6 million won from the county government. In addition, the county plans to link an extra 926.5 million won of county funds to support the construction of new vinyl greenhouses, facility modernization, and the supply of in-house developed, standardized smart farms.
Once the large-scale smart farm complex is established, it is expected to further strengthen the competitiveness of highland tomato producers, enhance the brand value of Dunnae's tomatoes, which are already known for their high quality and taste, and establish the region as the center of highland tomato production during the summer season.
Hoengseong County is strategically fostering smart agriculture to address population decline caused by climate change and the aging of the agricultural population. In line with government agricultural policies, the county plans to continue expanding smart farms tailored to the region's characteristics.
