"UNIque&beST Science and Technology Nexus, UNIST. We will simultaneously advance national strategic technologies and contribute to humanity."
UNIST (President Park Jongrae) has unveiled a new vision for the next 25 years of the university's future.
At the "UNIST Vision 2050 Proclamation Ceremony" held at the university headquarters on the 23rd, the university announced its ambition to co-evolve with industry and the region based on its research-oriented foundation, aiming to become a "global innovation nexus."
This event was a declaration that UNIST will not rest on its existing achievements but will take on new challenges. The university presented and shared a concrete roadmap to achieve Vision 2050 by the year 2050.
The core of Vision 2050 presented by UNIST is "Turning Imagination into Reality, the Nexus for Humanity's Future." To this end, UNIST has set "UNIque&beST Science and Technology Nexus" as its goal for 2050. Its core values are pioneering leadership, national and industrial innovation, and solving humanity's grand challenges.
① Unique Pioneer: A hub for nurturing pioneers who open new paths
② New Knowledge: Redefining the future of humanity and industry by connecting basic and applied research
③ Innovative Hub: A gathering place for top-tier global researchers
④ Super Intelligent Society: The center of a hyper-connected ecosystem where humans, technology, and knowledge are intertwined
⑤ Transformative Net-zero: Realizing a sustainable future through a carbon-negative campus
The development strategy has been concretized into five key words, "U.N.I.S.T." These serve as implementation tasks to realize the new vision, and form a roadmap for structural changes across the university's research, education, and innovation ecosystem.
Vision 2050 is a blueprint that condenses the university's achievements since its founding and aims to lead the era of great transformation with even greater energy. UNIST will contribute to humanity through science and technology based on three pillars: a hyper-connected knowledge ecosystem, a global research hub, and a sustainable campus. The university's ambition is not limited to competing in university rankings but to become the center of national strategic technologies rooted in the region.
The ceremony began with a luncheon for guests and a tour of research facilities. After the opening declaration and congratulatory remarks, there was a vision video screening, a special session introducing the dreams of new faculty members, and a speech by the president.
The highlight was the time capsule ceremony. Messages for future generations were placed in a capsule produced by the UNIST 3D Printing Center. Attendees envisioned together what UNIST and society would look like in 2050.
Finally, the event concluded with a vision proclamation performance and a commemorative photo, reaffirming their commitment to a bold new beginning.
The event was attended by a large number of government and local officials, as well as presidents of science and technology institutes. Kim Dongjun, Director of Future Talent Development at the Ministry of Science and ICT; Kim Bongcheol, Director of the Busan Digital Economy Office; and Ahn Hyodae, Deputy Mayor for Economic Affairs of Ulsan, were present.
Lim Kicheol, President of GIST; Lee Gyumin, Vice President of KAIST; Bae Sanghun, President of Pukyong National University; and Yoon Sungtaek, Vice President of Korea University, also attended. A UNIST official stated, "This proclamation is not just a vision for one university, but a starting point for charting a new course in national science and technology."
In particular, the Vision 2050 implementation plan includes the Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam AI cooperation strategy. The plan is to establish an industrial AI hub centered on UNIST, simultaneously driving regional innovation and the advancement of national strategic technologies.
This is not the first time UNIST has announced a mid- to long-term development plan. In 2011, it launched "Vision 2030" with the goal of becoming one of the world's top 10 universities. Since then, UNIST has ranked 15th among emerging universities in THE 2024, 4th among small universities worldwide, and 1st in the Leiden Ranking in Korea. It also demonstrated its research capabilities by having 10 researchers among the world's top 1% (2022 HCR).
President Park Jongrae emphasized, "Science and technology are the keys to solving humanity's grand challenges," adding, "Vision 2050 is not just a declaration but a promise to future generations that must be fulfilled."
