Cheongsong County to Support Farmers Affected by Spring Cabbage Soft Rot Disease
Cheongsong County in North Gyeongsang Province (Governor Yoon Kyunghee) will provide pesticide subsidies to farmers affected by spring cabbage soft rot disease, which occurred in mid to late June.
This disaster was caused by frequent rainfall and a heatwave occurring simultaneously just before the spring cabbage shipment period, resulting in damage reported from 60 farms across 51 hectares within the county.
In particular, Cheongsong County experienced greater damage compared to neighboring cities and counties because the transplanting and shipping period for spring cabbage is later than in other regions.
After conducting a comprehensive survey across all towns and villages in July, the county identified the extent of the damage and decided to allocate 102 million won from the county budget, providing 2 million won per hectare in subsidies (pesticide support) based on the damaged area.
This subsidy will be included in the supplementary budget and is scheduled to be distributed to farmers in September. Although it was difficult to secure national or provincial funding under the Agricultural and Fisheries Disaster Countermeasures Act, the county decided to use its own budget to ease the financial burden on farmers, despite challenging fiscal conditions due to wildfire damage and other factors.
