The "2025 East Sea Cup International Yacht Regatta and Wondong Cup International Yacht Regatta" were held at Yeongildae Beach in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, from September 12 to 14, showcasing the city's status as a global marine sports festival destination.
Sponsored by Pohang City and North Gyeongsang Province and organized by the North Gyeongsang Yacht Association, this event has continued to grow since its inaugural competition in 2022, establishing itself as Pohang's premier international marine sports festival.
This year marked the fourth edition of the East Sea Cup, with 25 teams composed of athletes from around the world competing in four categories, including Dinghy Yacht (LDC2000 General and Athlete Divisions) and Keelboat (J70, J24), delivering thrilling and dynamic races.
Additionally, the Wondong Cup International Yacht Regatta, now in its seventh year, is the largest international yacht regatta in Asia, sponsored by Qingdao Port Group and hosted by the Qingdao Olympic City Development Association. The event featured 100 athletes from 10 countries, including Korea, China, Russia, the United States, Japan, India, Australia, and France, forming eight teams to compete in both offshore (open sea) and inshore (coastal) races.
Pohang was selected as a port of call for the second consecutive year on the route that starts in Qingdao, China, passes through Vladivostok, Russia, and returns to China, further cementing its symbolic role in fostering international sports exchange within the East Sea region.
At the East Sea Cup awards ceremony, Chungcheongnam-do took first place in the J70 category, Team Cheoyong won the J24 category, TEAM LEE claimed the top spot in the LDC2000 Athlete Division, and TONGSOO won the LDC2000 General Division. In the Wondong Cup inshore race, Team Seven Feet Yacht Club, designated as Team 4 among the eight participating teams, took first place.
The event also featured a variety of programs beyond the yacht races, including an R.C. experience booth, recycling goods sales, and yacht equipment exhibitions, offering a wealth of attractions and activities for citizens and tourists alike.
In particular, Pohang City organized a familiarization tour for international athletes, connecting major tourist attractions such as Space Walk, Guryongpo, and Homigot Square, thereby promoting local culture and contributing to the revitalization of the tourism industry and the regional economy.
