The meeting was attended by key officials, including the deputy mayor and major department heads, who focused on discussing key issues directly affecting citizens' lives, such as ▲analyzing precipitation data from the past five years, ▲checking the water storage rate and water supply status of Gwangdong Dam, and ▲reviewing measures to secure raw water and promote water conservation.
Taebaek City had already held a situation assessment meeting on September 8 and proactively activated the drought response manual for each stage. The city is also encouraging citizens to practice water conservation through various channels, including banners, city notifications, and homepage banners.
In particular, the city government has established its own water-saving management plan, aiming to reduce water usage by 10% compared to the previous year and taking the lead by example. In cooperation with local community organizations, the city also plans to expand practical water-saving campaigns, such as installing water-saving showerheads and placing water bottles in toilet tanks, to encourage citizen participation.
Additionally, with Taebaek City expected to soon enter the "Caution Level" of drought, the city is actively considering a measure to reduce water bills by 50% for households that reduce their water usage by more than 20% compared to the same month of the previous year, in preparation for potential water supply restrictions by Korea Water Resources Corporation. This is intended to minimize the burden on citizens even during drought conditions.
Furthermore, to prepare for a prolonged drought, Taebaek City is installing emergency water intake facilities at the O2 Dam Reservoir and Hwajeon Water Intake (Yongso) to ensure a stable water supply even in crisis situations.
Mayor Sangho Lee stated, "Although the situation is not yet at a critical stage, thorough preparation from the outset is the key to ensuring citizen safety. We will operate the disaster safety system rigorously to prevent any gaps in response even if the drought continues, and I ask all citizens to actively practice water conservation in their daily lives."
