Gangdong District to Finalize Blueprint for Eco-Friendly Han River Waterfront Development This Month
“Gangdong River Greenway” Project
Step-by-Step Development of an Eco-Friendly Han River Destination
Gangdong District in Seoul (District Mayor Lee Soohee) announced on September 10 that it will finalize the basic plan for the 'Gangdong River Greenway' within this month, aiming to transform the Han River waterfront into an eco-friendly riverside attraction integrated with residents' daily lives.
Since October last year, the district has conducted a 'Feasibility Study on Eco-Friendly Maintenance and Development of the Han River Waterfront,' analyzing current conditions and potential. Through consultations with relevant agencies and institutional reviews, the district has developed feasible development proposals. The plan aims to restore and preserve natural features, promote sustainable local revitalization, enhance satisfaction for residents and visitors, and establish the area as a landmark and brand.
The project will be carried out in short-, medium-, and long-term phases. In the short term, projects that are possible within the current regulatory framework will be prioritized. In the medium and long term, the district will seek to ease regulations to develop the Han River waterfront into a destination where culture, art, and ecology coexist.
The Gangdong section of the Han River will be developed in four segments, from Amsa Ecological Park to Garaeyeoul Village. The area around the Amsa-dong Prehistoric Site and Amsa Ecological Park will become a combined historical and ecological space. From Amsa Water Intake Station to Godeoksan, the district will create a landscape-specialized area featuring observation decks and ecological bridges. The segment from Godeoksan to Godeokcheon will be developed as a healing space blending ecology and the urban environment, while the stretch from Godeokcheon to Garaeyeoul Village will feature rest areas and food streets for cyclists.
The district expects the Gangdong River Greenway to deliver a range of benefits, including expanded leisure and relaxation spaces for residents, educational and experiential opportunities, the growth of tourism and cultural content, and revitalization of the local economy.
