Jeonnam Autonomous Police Committee Issues No-Show Scam Advisory

The Jeonnam Autonomous Police Committee has issued a "No-Show Scam Advisory" following a series of recent "no-show" scam incidents targeting restaurants, lodging businesses, hospitals, academies, and delivery services. These scams involve making reservations and failing to appear, or manipulating businesses into placing additional orders for other items on behalf of the scammer.
A no-show scam refers to acts where individuals make fake reservations at establishments and do not show up, or exploit the reservation system to inflict financial or operational losses.
This is not simply a matter of breaking a promise; business owners suffer losses in food, ingredients, and labor costs, performances and events face disruptions due to empty seats, and hospitals and academies lose opportunities to serve other residents.
Some cases have escalated into malicious no-shows intended to sabotage competitors, or scams disguised as secondhand transactions or delivery requests, becoming a broader social issue.
Additionally, there have been instances where scammers make large reservations with small business owners, then claim additional items are needed and demand the business purchase them on their behalf-only to steal the payment for those items.
To prevent no-show scam damages, it is necessary to verify the identity of the person placing large orders, and if they claim to be a public official or from an organization, to directly confirm with the relevant institution. It is also advisable to request a deposit or advance payment for reservations.
The Jeonnam Autonomous Police Committee, in cooperation with the Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency, is producing and distributing flyers to prevent such scams. The committee is also actively sharing case studies with related organizations and groups, in collaboration with Jeonnam Province’s departments, to enhance prevention efforts.
Furthermore, the committee plans to strengthen education for residents by including no-show scam prevention in various educational programs such as the Autonomous Police Safety University, the Youth Autonomous Police School, and crime safety education courses.

Jeong Soonkwan, Chairperson of the Jeonnam Autonomous Police Committee, stated, "No-show scams are criminal acts that undermine social trust and cause suffering to business owners. We can reduce damages when a culture of honoring even small promises takes root. If you experience any damages, please report them to the police without delay."
