Hoengseong County in Gangwon Province announced on September 8 that it has strengthened measures to proactively address the algae bloom issue following the issuance of the "Attention" level alert for the Hoengseong Lake Algae Alert System on September 4.
In particular, the county is conducting joint inspections with the Wonju Regional Environmental Office, focusing on the upper stream of Hoengseong Dam, to thoroughly check the management status of livestock manure discharge facilities. It is also intensifying the management of compost piles along riverbanks two to three times a week to block pollution sources in preparation for algae blooms.
In addition, public sewage treatment facilities are continuously monitoring water quality indicators such as total phosphorus (T-P), total nitrogen (T-N), and suspended solids (SS) in real time through the central control system. The county is also thoroughly preparing for emergencies by ensuring the readiness and inventory of chemical supplies.
Seo Youngwon, head of the county's environmental department, stated, "We will continue to work closely with relevant agencies and strengthen our management efforts to prevent water pollution and create a safe living environment for residents."
