BASF Takes First Step Toward All-Solid-State Commercialization... Supplies Semi-Solid Cathode Material to China's Welion
Overcoming Interfacial Challenges with Composite Coating Technology
From Conceptual Design to Mass Production in Just One Year
Global chemical company BASF has supplied cathode active materials for semi-solid batteries to China's WELION New Energy for the first time on a mass-production scale. This achievement is considered a milestone on the path toward next-generation advanced batteries.
On September 5, BASF announced the results of its collaborative project with WELION through its battery materials joint venture, BASF Shanshan Battery Materials (BSBM). The two companies completed the entire process from conceptual design to establishing a mass production system in just one year after launching the project in August of last year.
BSBM applied its proprietary composite coating layer to high-nickel NCM (nickel, cobalt, manganese) based cathode materials, addressing the interfacial issues with solid electrolytes. As a result, the company achieved improvements in energy density by reducing resistance, extended lifespan by suppressing interfacial side reactions, and stabilized cycle performance. Industry experts view this application of technology as a case that overcomes a key hurdle to the commercialization of all-solid-state batteries.
Desmond Long, Senior Vice President of BASF Battery Materials and CEO of BSBM, stated, "This collaboration is a leap forward into the field of all-solid-state batteries and the result of close cooperation between the technical teams of both companies. We will continue to strengthen our partnership with WELION to contribute to the future of the battery industry."
