Following a presidential visit on August 30, the area was declared a disaster zone. As of September 3, the storage rate at Obong Reservoir had fallen to around 13%, and with no rain forecasted for the time being, the drought crisis continues.
In response, Gangneung City is focusing on securing additional water by developing groundwater wells and installing a water pumping station in the Hongje Water Purification Plant area along the Namdaecheon. The project, with a budget of 500 million won (Disaster Special Grant Tax), includes the construction of five large-diameter groundwater wells and one water pumping station.
The city aims to secure a total of 2,500 tons of raw water per day through the installation of the five large-diameter wells and the pumping station. Currently, four out of the five wells have been completed, and earthwork is underway for the pumping station. The city plans to complete the installation of both the wells and the pumping station in September and gradually begin trial operations.
With this project, along with auxiliary water sources such as Lotte Cinema, the conversion of Namdaecheon Gusanbo to domestic water use, water delivery by truck, additional raw water input from Obong Reservoir, and emergency water supply from Yeongok Water Purification Plant, Gangneung City will be able to supply approximately 30,000 tons of domestic water per day.
