Professor Youngkeun An set a new record by having another paper published in The Lancet, four years after he became the first member of Chonnam National University Hospital's medical staff to be published in the journal in 2021.
Chonnam National University Hospital announced on September 1 that the team led by Professors Youngkeun An and Mincheol Kim was selected for the "Most Innovative Clinical Research" award at the European Society of Cardiology Annual Congress (ESC Congress 2025) held in Madrid, Spain, on August 31. Their paper was presented at the conference and simultaneously published online in The Lancet.
The paper, titled "Coronary Intervention in Patients with ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction and Multivessel Disease" (first author: Professor Mincheol Kim; corresponding author: Professor Youngkeun An), compared two groups in a clinical trial: one group underwent simultaneous multivessel intervention (treating both culprit and non-culprit vessels at the same time), while the other group received staged intervention during hospitalization (treating the culprit vessel first and the non-culprit vessel later during the hospital stay).
The study concluded that multivessel intervention in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction is recommended for stable patients without heart failure. This finding is expected to have a significant impact on future treatment guidelines, providing important evidence for determining intervention patterns in this patient group. The research was a large-scale study involving 994 patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction registered at 14 major cardiovascular centers nationwide between 2019 and 2025.
Founded in 1823, The Lancet is regarded as one of the world's leading medical journals, alongside the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) in the United States. With an impact factor (IF) of 88.5 as of 2025, it is a highly authoritative journal, and it is extremely rare for papers from Korea to be published in it.

Professor Youngkeun An stated, "Through this research, we have identified the most appropriate intervention pattern for patients with acute myocardial infarction and multivessel disease, who have a high mortality rate, marking a turning point in treatment. We will continue our efforts to provide new hope for patients through ongoing research."
