LX International Becomes First Korean Company to Receive Official Certification for Overseas Mine Environmental Restoration
First Official Certification for Overseas Mine Environmental Restoration by the Philippine Government
LX International Sets a New Standard for Responsible and Sustainable Resource Development
LX International has completed environmental restoration work at the LapuLapu copper mine in the Philippines and has received official certification for this achievement from the Philippine government.
This marks the first case in which the Philippine government has officially certified that a company has verified and implemented a "final mine rehabilitation and closure plan" since environmental restoration became mandatory with the amendment of the Mining Act in 1995. It is also the first time a Korean company has completed environmental restoration at an overseas mine and received official approval from the local government.

LX International acquired the LapuLapu mine in 2008, produced copper and zinc, and began full-scale environmental restoration work in 2018. During the restoration process, the company focused on coexisting with the local community, collaborating with residents to restore soil and water quality and rehabilitate the ecosystem. It also improved living infrastructure in nearby villages, supported educational activities by building an elementary school, and established a scholarship fund to help residents attend college.
The Philippine mining industry views this case as a significant turning point for the sector as a whole. Director Cabalda of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau stated, "We are grateful for LX International's responsible environmental restoration work. This is a model case of sustainable development and environmental restoration based on corporate responsibility, as well as a successful example of coexisting with the local community. We will continue to actively cooperate with LX International's resource business in the future."
LX International plans to continue pursuing sustainable resource projects. First, the company is seeking to acquire additional nickel assets to enhance productivity at the Indonesian AKP nickel mine acquired in 2024. In the mid- to long-term, it also plans to diversify its business portfolio by considering investments in overseas copper assets, including those in the Philippines.
