Gangnam-gu Launches Nationwide “Construction Site Fence Design Contest”
Entries Accepted Until September 18
20 Winners to Receive 2.2 Million KRW Each
Gangnam-gu, Seoul (Mayor Cho Sungmyung) is holding a “Green Smart Canvas Art Contest” to transform construction site fences into artistic spaces. The contest runs until September 18, and the selected artworks will be installed along major streets in Gangnam, becoming “urban exhibitions” that citizens and tourists encounter every day.
Since the project began in 2022, a total of 71 winning works have been selected and installed at over 100 locations, including large construction sites, arterial roads, and busy commercial areas. Local residents and visitors have praised the initiative, saying, “Walking down the street, seeing construction fences decorated with beautiful artwork lifts my spirits.” The project has been highly effective in transforming the atmosphere of otherwise bleak construction sites.
This year’s contest theme aligns with the 8th popularly elected administration’s slogan, “A City Where Dreams Gather, Gangnam Painting the Future.” Submitted works should visually express Gangnam’s vision of nature, eco-friendliness, and the future. Anyone aged 19 or older may participate individually or as a team of up to three people, and each individual or team may submit up to two entries.
Designs must be suitable for actual installation on a temporary fence 6 meters high, and should feature sophisticated and lively images, such as pop art, typography, or illustration. Durability, cost-effectiveness, and safety must also be considered, and proposals for objects to be installed on top of the fence are allowed. Entries will be judged on creativity (40 points), practicality (30 points), public value (20 points), and other criteria (10 points). Additional points will be awarded to Gangnam residents, young artists (aged 39 or younger), and artists with disabilities.
Applicants must download the application form from the district office’s public notice board and submit the application form, artwork images (ai, jpg), artwork description, and judging panel materials via email (thdus2395@gangnam.go.kr). Among these, the judging panel materials must be submitted in person to the Architecture Division by 6:00 p.m. on September 18.
In the final judging, a total of 20 works will be selected, with each winner receiving 2.2 million KRW. The winning works will be used on temporary fences at construction sites throughout Gangnam-gu in the future. For inquiries, contact the Architecture Division at 02-3423-6164.
