View original imageOn the morning of August 14, the West Sea Regional Coast Guard conducted a joint maritime search and rescue communication drill with the Shandong Rescue Center of China in the West Sea, simulating an emergency water landing of an international passenger plane.
This drill marked the third joint exercise of the year among maritime search and rescue agencies, and was organized to strengthen a swift and effective maritime search and rescue cooperation system.
The scenario involved an international passenger plane departing from Incheon International Airport and en route to Hangzhou, China, making an emergency water landing in the Korea-China Provisional Measures Zone due to an aircraft malfunction.
In particular, the West Sea Coast Guard stated that the drill focused on enhancing preparedness for the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) continuous monitoring assessment on aviation safety scheduled for the second half of next year, with an emphasis on search and rescue evaluation and improving response capabilities to aircraft accidents.

An official from the West Sea Regional Coast Guard said, "Since 2011, we have maintained an annual training program based on a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for maritime search and rescue cooperation with the Shandong Maritime Search and Rescue Center in China. We will continue to develop the bilateral rescue cooperation system to ensure a swift and effective response to various maritime accidents."
