Cho Kuk Innovation Party Prepares for Cho Kuk's Return... Shortens Supreme Council Terms and Announces Party Convention
Cho Kuk Innovation Party Executive Committee Resolves on July 13
Regular Party Convention to Be Held
New Leadership to Serve Two-Year Term
With the release of former Cho Kuk Innovation Party leader Cho Kuk scheduled for Liberation Day, the Cho Kuk Innovation Party has begun procedures to form a new party leadership. The terms of all current Supreme Council members will be shortened, and a regular party convention will be held to reorganize the leadership.
On the 13th at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Hwang Hyunseon, Secretary-General of the Cho Kuk Innovation Party, met with reporters after the party executive committee meeting and stated, "We have decided to shorten the terms of all Supreme Council members, including Acting Party Leader Kim Minseon," adding, "The executive committee fully respects the Supreme Council's decision and accepts it with a sense of urgency."
The convention to form the new leadership will be a regular party convention, not an extraordinary one. The leadership elected at the regular convention will be guaranteed a two-year term. Secretary-General Hwang explained, "We have resolved to use the convention as an opportunity for the party's second leap forward, including the formation of regional committees nationwide, the selection of national delegates by region, reorganization of city and provincial party committees, and the election of Supreme Council members."
Yoon Jaegwan, Chief Spokesperson of the Cho Kuk Innovation Party, added, "The difference between a regular and an extraordinary party convention is that, in the case of a regular convention, the entire leadership is restructured," and clarified, "Elected positions such as regional committee chairs, city and provincial party chairs, Supreme Council members, and the party leader will all be newly appointed."
This move appears to be made with the political comeback of former leader Cho Kuk in mind, who will be released at midnight on the 15th through a special Liberation Day pardon. When asked by reporters whether holding a regular party convention was a decision made with Cho's return in consideration, Chief Spokesperson Yoon replied, "Yes."
At the executive committee meeting that day, five key initiatives to be pursued for the Cho Kuk Innovation Party 2.0 era were also discussed. The five initiatives are: the complete end to insurrection, the realization of strong political reform and a multi-party coalition politics, the establishment of a solid alliance among democratic and progressive forces, a stable leadership system and party unity, and the future legitimization of the party.
