Paju City Selects Additional Recipients for Self-Sufficiency Support for Victims of Prostitution, Bringing Total to 19
Four More Beneficiaries Supported in Two Rounds Since Ordinance Revision
Demonstrating Tangible Effects of the Amendment
Paju City in Gyeonggi Province announced on August 12 that it recently held a meeting of the "Committee for the Self-Sufficiency Support of Victims of Prostitution" and decided to provide self-sufficiency support to two new applicants. With this decision, the total number of individuals receiving self-sufficiency support from Paju City has increased to 19.
This selection marks the second case in which the revised "Paju City Ordinance on Self-Sufficiency Support for Victims of Prostitution," amended in July, has been applied. Before the amendment, only those confirmed as victims of prostitution between "one year prior to the enforcement date of the ordinance and the enforcement date itself" were eligible to apply for support, which limited the pool of beneficiaries. However, with the deletion of this clause through the amendment, the institutional barrier has been lowered, allowing any victim of prostitution in need of self-sufficiency?regardless of when they were identified?to apply for support.
Paju City believes that this decision demonstrates the effective implementation of the improved system following the ordinance revision, and that the foundation for providing practical independence to victims who were previously excluded from the system is gradually expanding.
Self-sufficiency support for victims of prostitution is provided when a victim requests assistance from the city. A committee composed of experts and related officials reviews each case to comprehensively assess eligibility and the necessity of support before making a decision.
