The Working Committee has completed the review of 5,836 reports out of a total of 7,465 reports of victims and bereaved families related to the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident, processing 78% of all submissions.
The 295 cases reviewed this time will be submitted to the Yeosu-Suncheon October 19 Incident Fact-Finding and Victim Honor Restoration Committee (chaired by the Prime Minister and the Central Committee) for final assessment and decision regarding the victims and their families.
The Working Committee aims to process 100% of the existing reports by the end of this year to ensure prompt fact-finding and honor restoration, taking into account the advanced age of victims and bereaved families, as well as the need for fairness with the Jeju 4·3 Incident. The committee also plans to swiftly review and approve additional reports submitted under the revised special law.
In addition, the committee agreed to ensure the smooth implementation of key projects related to the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident, including the extension of the operation period for designated hospitals for victim treatment, the establishment of memorial hubs for commemorative projects, the 77th joint memorial ceremony for the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident, and the 2nd Peace Literature Award.
The Yeosu-Suncheon Incident Support Team of Jeonnam Province plans to collaborate with the Central Committee to develop efficient review procedures, such as increasing the number of investigators for prompt assessment of victims and bereaved families and formalizing review standards.
