Yangju’s “IB Education Belt” Becoming a Reality
Yangju City in Gyeonggi Province announced on August 11 that Nammun Middle School has received certification as an IB World School, allowing it to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum.
This is the second IB certification in Yangju City this year, following Hyochon Elementary School in March, and marks the first time a middle school in the city has received this recognition.
With Nammun Middle School’s IB certification, Yangju City has established a connected IB educational system spanning elementary (Hyochon Elementary School) and middle school (Nammun Middle School). Furthermore, if Deokjeong High School, which is currently an IB candidate school, receives certification in the future, the city will have an “IB education belt,” enabling students to complete the entire IB curriculum from elementary through high school within the region.
The International Baccalaureate curriculum is a forward-looking educational program developed by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), emphasizing creative and critical thinking as well as inquiry skills, with the aim of fostering students as global citizens. Schools must go through the stages of “interested school?candidate school?authorized school” to offer the IB program. The recent certification of Nammun Middle School is seen as an achievement made possible by the efforts of faculty, students, and parents alike.
Since Hyochon Elementary School received IB certification, interest from both within and outside the district has surged, leading to an increase in student enrollment. The educational benefits have spread by word of mouth, resulting in more transfers from students in other school districts and a rise in inquiries from parents, driving positive change.
