Yeongcheon City Achieves First Tomato Harvest at Region-Specialized Rental Smart Farm... Young Farmers’ Smart Farm Results Become Visible
On August 6, Yeongcheon City announced that it had completed the first tomato harvest at its region-specialized rental smart farm.
The region-specialized rental smart farm, which young farmers moved into in June, has been operating stably, producing a bountiful tomato harvest in the greenhouse following a cucumber harvest in early July.
This project was launched after being selected for a Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs public contest in 2022. Twenty young farmers are currently cultivating crops using smart farming methods in seven glass greenhouses, each covering 4 hectares, located in Guam-ri, Kumho-eup.
Yeongcheon City’s rental smart farm recruits participants in teams, with each team managing one greenhouse. This system allows for a high degree of management autonomy and independent operation for each team, which has been met with an enthusiastic response.
Each greenhouse is approximately 5,400 square meters, and three young farmers jointly manage each greenhouse.
Currently, three crops?strawberries, tomatoes, and cucumbers?are being cultivated, and the tomatoes harvested on this day were grown in three of the greenhouses.
One of the young farmers cultivating tomatoes said, "I dreamed of moving in ever since I heard about the creation of the smart farm. I am deeply moved by this first harvest, and as a member of the first group of tenants, I hope to become a successful model for Yeongcheon City’s smart farm."
