National Institute of Forest Science: "Boribapnamu Effective in Preventing Hair Loss"
A study has found that Boribapnamu is effective in preventing hair loss.
The National Institute of Forest Science announced on August 6 that the native Korean plant 'Boribapnamu' has been confirmed to prevent hair loss by strengthening dermal papilla cells, which are key cells located at the base of hair follicles and play an important role in hair growth and development.
Boribapnamu, an evergreen broadleaf vine, mainly inhabits coastal areas. Its distinguishing feature is the presence of silvery-white and light brown scale hairs on its small branches. In traditional Korean medicine, it is called 'Dongjo' and has been used as a medicinal ingredient for asthma, coughs, phlegm, and diabetes.
Previously, the Forest Bio-Resources Research Center of the National Institute of Forest Science conducted research on more than 170 types of forest resources starting in 2022 to discover forest bio-resources effective for hair health.
During this process, Boribapnamu was found to have the most outstanding effect in strengthening dermal papilla cells. For example, when Boribapnamu extract was applied at a concentration of 10ug/ml, dermal papilla cell activity increased by 150%. When the extract concentration was 30ug/ml, dermal papilla cell activity improved by up to 175%.
Based on these research results, the National Institute of Forest Science secured the safety of the raw material by receiving a 'non-irritating' grade in a skin safety evaluation. The institute also produced a prototype ampoule containing Boribapnamu extract and reviewed its usability and stability.
In addition, a patent has been registered for the research findings, and Boribapnamu (extract) has been listed in the International Cosmetic Ingredient Dictionary, securing both the usability of the ingredient and the source technology. Currently, clinical efficacy trials are underway to prove its applicability to humans.
