Special Prosecutor Investigates Kim Sangwook as Witness in Alleged Obstruction of National Assembly Martial Law Lifting
The Special Prosecutor for the Insurrection Case (Special Prosecutor Cho Eunseok) summoned and questioned Kim Sangwook, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, in connection with suspicions of obstructing the National Assembly's resolution to lift martial law.
According to the legal community on August 1, the special prosecutor's team summoned Kim as a witness on July 30. Kim was one of 18 People Power Party lawmakers who participated in the vote on the resolution demanding the lifting of martial law in the early morning of December 4 last year. At that time, the resolution passed with 190 lawmakers present and 190 in favor, while 90 out of 108 People Power Party lawmakers did not participate.
The special prosecutor's team is investigating whether former President Yoon Sukyeol and then People Power Party floor leader Chu Kyungho were involved in the circumstances that prevented a significant number of People Power Party lawmakers from attending the vote to lift martial law. At that time, former floor leader Chu initially announced that the party meeting would be held at the National Assembly, then changed the location to the Yeouido party headquarters. Afterwards, the meeting location was again announced as the National Assembly, and then changed once more to the Yeouido party headquarters.
The special prosecutor's team suspects that former floor leader Chu may have changed the meeting location several times after speaking with former President Yoon, thereby obstructing People Power Party lawmakers from participating in the National Assembly vote on the resolution to lift martial law.
