Songpa-daero to Become a Pedestrian-Friendly Street Garden... 91% of Residents Express Anticipation
"It Will Help Revitalize the Local Commercial District"
Songpa-daero Premium Street Project 80% Complete
Songpa-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Seo Kangseok) announced on July 29 that, according to a public opinion survey on the “Songpa-daero Pedestrian-Friendly Street Garden Project,” more than 90% of respondents agreed with the purpose of the project and expressed their anticipation by stating they would “like to walk along it themselves.”
This survey was conducted via Seoul City’s M Voting platform from June 26 to July 11 to assess public understanding and perception of the project. A total of 2,000 people participated in the survey. The response rate for “I would like to walk along Songpa-daero if the sidewalks are widened and gardens are created” was 91.4%. Additionally, 90.7% responded that “it will help revitalize the local commercial district,” and 90.5% answered that “it will contribute to enhancing the city’s brand value.” These results demonstrate the strong interest of local residents in the transformation of Songpa-daero.
The “Pedestrian-Friendly Street Garden Project” is a core initiative of the “Songpa-daero Premium Street Creation” pledge from the 8th popularly elected administration. The project involves reducing a 1.5 km section of the currently 10-lane Songpa-daero to 8 lanes and creating gardens to significantly expand pedestrian space. This initiative aligns with the global trend of reorganizing urban spaces to prioritize pedestrians over vehicles.
Currently, Songpa-gu is implementing 25 detailed projects in phases along a 6.2 km stretch of Songpa-daero to create a premium street. As of July this year, 20 projects have been completed, achieving an approximate progress rate of 80%. Key projects include the creation of premium pine tree forests at both ends of Songpa-daero, the transformation of the area under Jamsilhosugyo Bridge into an art space called “Hosugyo Gallery,” and the installation of a large-scale media art sculpture called “The Sphere.” There are also plans to connect major attractions such as Garak Market, Trophy Park, and a giant Taegeukgi along a pedestrian axis, thereby expanding the tourist route from Jamsil to the entire Songpa area.
