Mungyeong City Officially Certified as Ramsar Wetland City, Becomes Korea's Ninth Ecological City
Mungyeong Dolina Wetland
Earns Global Recognition as a Ramsar Wetland City
Mungyeong City in North Gyeongsang Province has been officially recognized as a globally significant wetland conservation city, further elevating its status as an international ecological city.
On July 24 (local time), the city received the official Ramsar Wetland City certificate at the 15th Meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention (COP15), held in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, Africa.
This conference was held from July 23 to July 31. After a rigorous review by the Independent Advisory Committee, 31 new cities were selected as the third group of Ramsar Wetland Cities. With this addition, the total number of Ramsar Wetland Cities worldwide has expanded to 74.
A Ramsar Wetland City refers to a city located near internationally important wetland conservation areas, such as Ramsar Wetlands, where the local community voluntarily leads in conservation and wise use. Mungyeong City received high praise for its ongoing conservation activities centered around the Mungyeong Dolina Wetland and strong citizen participation, which led to this certification.
Korea's Ramsar Wetland Cities now total nine, with the addition of Mungyeong City and Gimhae City (Hwapocheon Wetland) in this third round. The first round in 2018 included four cities (Changnyeong Upo Wetland, Inje Yongneup, Jeju City Dongbaekdongsan Wetland, and Suncheon Bay). The second round in 2022 added three cities (Seogwipo City Mulyeongari Oreum, Gochang Ungok Wetland and Tidal Flat, and Seocheon Tidal Flat).
Shin Hyunkook, Mayor of Mungyeong, stated, "This certification has become an important opportunity to promote the Mungyeong Dolina Wetland to the world." He added, "We will continue to do our best to protect this precious natural heritage and help Mungyeong become a world-class ecotourism city."
With this certification, Mungyeong City plans to strengthen the connection between ecological conservation and the tourism industry, aiming to become a leading eco-friendly city with international competitiveness.
