On his first day in office on July 25, Minister of Unification Chung Dongyoung visited Panmunjom, located in Paju City, Gyeonggi Province. Even before holding his inauguration ceremony, he chose to visit this symbolic site of 'inter-Korean dialogue' immediately after President Lee Jaemyung approved his appointment.

View original imageAccording to the Ministry of Unification, Minister Chung, accompanied by officials from the United Nations Command (UNC) and other related parties, visited facilities such as the Freedom House and Peace House, and inspected the status of the long-disconnected inter-Korean communication channels.
Panmunjom has been the venue for more than 370 meetings, starting with the inter-Korean Red Cross contacts in 1971 and including the 2018 inter-Korean summit.

Minister Chung stated, "The restoration of the severed inter-Korean communication channels is the most urgent task for the resumption of inter-Korean dialogue and the swift recovery of trust." He added, "Going forward, we will do our utmost to transform Panmunjom from a place of division and tension into a space of connection and cooperation, through close collaboration with the UNC and other relevant organizations."
