Wemade Wins Damages Lawsuit Against Wi Junghyun, Hopes for Reputation Restoration
Cleared of "P2E Lobbying" Allegations Over Free WEMIX Distribution
"Striving for Virtual Asset Industry Development... Hoping Our Sincerity Is Understood"
On July 25, Wemade stated regarding the court's ruling in its favor in the damages lawsuit against Wi Jung-hyun, president of the Korea Game Society, "We hope our sincere commitment to achieving a transparent society through blockchain will be properly conveyed."
The Seoul Eastern District Court ordered Wi Jung-hyun to pay 30 million won in damages the previous day. This ruling officially recognized that all allegations raised by Wi Jung-hyun regarding Wemade since around May 2023 were false.
Wi Jung-hyun had repeatedly claimed through public statements, media interviews, and forums that "Wemade engaged in lobbying activities by providing the virtual asset WEMIX free of charge to members of the National Assembly and their aides to create shared interests, thereby forming a WEMIX profit community." He also raised suspicions that "Wemade is at the center of lobbying for play-to-earn (P2E) games."
He further demanded that "Wemade must reveal the truth about the coin gate," calling for a full investigation into whether members of the National Assembly and their aides held WEMIX. He stated that he possessed evidence related to the National Assembly lobbying suspicions but could not disclose it at the time.
In response, Wemade filed a criminal complaint against Wi Jung-hyun for defamation by spreading false information. In July of the same year, Wemade also filed a civil lawsuit seeking 500 million won in damages, later revising the claim to 50 million won.
The "P2E lobbying" allegations against Wemade came to a close in August last year when prosecutors cleared Nam-kook Kim, then Digital Communications Secretary at the Presidential Office and a related figure, of charges concerning "suspicion of acquiring undisclosed important information."
Wemade stated, "Due to Wi Jung-hyun's irresponsible and false claims, we have suffered enormous damage for years, including prosecution investigations and National Assembly inquiries," adding, "Our corporate image has been irreparably tarnished by the stigma of being labeled an 'illegal lobbying company.'"
