President Gunwoo Lee of DGIST: "We Will Focus Our Research Capabilities on the Three Major Future Strategic Fields"
Future Forum Held in Seoul
Focusing on Physical AI and Quantum Sensing
DGIST (President Gunwoo Lee) held the 'DGIST Future Insight Forum' at 10:00 a.m. on July 23 at El Tower in Yangjae-dong, Seoul.
This forum was organized to share the research vision for the three major future strategic fields that DGIST is focusing on: Physical AI, Human Digital Twin, and Quantum Sensing. The event also aimed to discuss the impact these technologies will have on future society and explore directions for their convergent development.
The forum began with a keynote speech by DGIST adjunct professor Jihun Jung, titled "The Age of Convergence: The Beginning of the POST-AI Paradigm Beyond the AI Revolution." This was followed by a progress report from the Future Strategy Field Discovery Committee, presentations on each strategic field, and a panel discussion.
In the Physical AI session, the importance of artificial intelligence technology was highlighted as it expands from simple information processing to the real world. The session emphasized its role as a core technology for solving real-life problems in manufacturing, logistics, and disaster response through integration with various systems such as humanoid robots, service robots, autonomous vehicles, and wearable devices.
The Human Digital Twin presentation pointed out that previous research has faced challenges in diagnosis and treatment due to fragmented data and long-term limitations. It proposed the possibility of comprehensively interpreting and utilizing biohealth data by predicting interactions between organisms and their environment based on large-scale, multi-layered bio data.
In the Quantum Sensing session, it was explained that quantum mechanical properties such as quantum entanglement and coherence enable high-sensitivity and high-resolution measurement of physical quantities that are difficult to measure with conventional sensors. The presentation highlighted the far-reaching impact of this technology by introducing application cases in various next-generation scientific and technological research fields, including quantum navigation, gravity sensors, and single-cell analysis.
President Gunwoo Lee stated, "Over the past year, DGIST has identified flagship research fields to focus on, centered around the Future Committee," and added, "We will continue to concentrate our research capabilities on the three strategic fields so that DGIST can become a research institution that produces innovative results."
Meanwhile, since July last year, DGIST has operated the Future Committee to identify strategic fields that contribute to national and regional development, not only in research and development but also in talent cultivation, technology commercialization, and the creation of an industrial ecosystem. The committee is chaired by Euijoon Yoon, President of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea, and includes nine early-career DGIST researchers, the Vice President for Academic Affairs, and the Vice President for Research. Over the past year, the committee has held more than 14 meetings to facilitate active discussions.
DGIST professors and attendees are gathered together for a commemorative photo after concluding the forum.

Going forward, DGIST plans to actively pursue large-scale national projects, nurture specialized talent, strengthen research competitiveness, and promote technology commercialization and industrialization, with each field's strategic implementation team at the center of these efforts.
