APEC Summit to Be Held in Gyeongju from October 31 to November 1
Invitation of North Korea "Subject to Review by Diplomatic and Unification Authorities"
President Lee Jaemyung has sent invitation letters to the leaders of member countries of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, which will be held in Gyeongju in October.
On the 15th, spokesperson Kang Yujeong stated during a briefing at the Yongsan presidential office, "Through this letter, President Lee informed that this year's APEC summit will take place from October 31 to November 1 and expressed his intention to invite the member countries." Kang further explained, "The invitation letter also conveyed President Lee's expectation that, under the theme 'A Sustainable Tomorrow We Create,' the summit will produce meaningful outcomes on topics such as strengthening regional connectivity and digital innovation."
APEC has 21 member countries, including Korea, the United States, Japan, China, and Russia. In the letter, President Lee assessed that APEC has contributed to sustainable economic growth and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region over the past 30 years.

When asked about the possibility of Chinese President Xi Jinping's attendance, spokesperson Kang replied, "China is among the countries to which the invitation letter was sent," and added, "The final list of attending countries will be announced once it is confirmed." Regarding whether North Korea could be included as an invitee, Kang stated, "North Korea is not an APEC member country, so it was not among the countries that received the invitation letter." She also responded that the issue of inviting North Korea would be a matter for review by the diplomatic and unification authorities.
