Samsung Heavy Industries Develops 'VR Solution' for Eco-Friendly Ships
Installed at Evergreen Headquarters for Crew Training
Improved Operational Safety, Reduced Costs and Risks
On July 11, Samsung Heavy Industries announced that it has installed a virtual reality (VR) solution for 16,500 TEU-class eco-friendly container ships at the headquarters of Evergreen, a Taiwanese shipping company.

View original imageThis solution was developed to allow crew members, who operate methanol dual-fuel vessels, to learn about the engine room and fuel supply facilities in a virtual environment before boarding the actual ship. It also enables them to repeatedly train for emergency situations such as fuel leaks or fires. Samsung Heavy Industries has implemented a system that utilizes 3D design data, allowing users to inspect and operate key ship equipment without boarding the actual vessel.

The company expects that the VR solution will reduce operational risks associated with increasingly complex eco-friendly ships and also help lower maintenance costs. Samsung Heavy Industries and Evergreen plan to continue their collaboration, including joint research on autonomous navigation technology (SAS). Lee Dongyeon, Vice President and Head of the Ship and Offshore Research Institute at Samsung Heavy Industries, stated, "The customized VR solution will contribute to enhancing the operational safety of eco-friendly vessels."
