Yongsan District to Install 'Smart Safety Monitoring System' in 40 Public Senior Centers in Second Half of the Year

On July 6, the Yongsan District Office in Seoul announced plans to install the 'Smart Safety Monitoring System' in approximately 40 district-run senior centers during the second half of this year. This system will create a safer environment by installing safety bells and Internet of Things (IoT) fire and leakage detection sensors, as well as enabling 24-hour real-time monitoring.

On July 4, a 'Smart Senior Center Demonstration' was held at the Maebong Senior Center in Hannam-dong (32 Hannam-daero 40-gil). The event was organized to introduce the district's first smart senior center to the local community and to showcase the practical use of digital welfare services for elderly residents.

The smart senior center is equipped with an IoT-based smart safety system utilizing fire and gas detection sensors, smart healthcare devices capable of measuring blood pressure and blood sugar, a game-based exercise device called 'Smart Walk,' and educational kiosks where seniors can experience digital technology. These features are designed to help seniors manage their health and leisure activities, while also naturally reducing their reluctance toward digital technology.

To assist seniors who may have difficulty using smart devices, the district plans to assign 'Smart Mate' personnel?selected through the senior employment program?to the centers to provide device guidance and regular support.

The event was attended by more than 40 people, including Mayor Park Heeyoung, the head of the Yongsan branch of the Korean Senior Citizens Association, district council members, and local elderly residents.

Park Heeyoung, mayor of Yongsan District, stated, "We must bridge the digital divide and ensure that every senior can benefit from new technologies," and added, "We will continue to support senior centers so that they become hubs for realizing digital welfare, beyond simply being spaces for leisure."
