On July 4 (local time), U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his willingness to provide air defense support to Ukraine during a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, according to the U.S. media outlet Axios.
According to Axios, sources familiar with the conversation reported that President Trump told President Zelensky during the call, "I want to provide air defense support. If there are any parts that have been put on hold, I will review them." The sources also added that President Trump and President Zelensky agreed to have officials from both countries meet to discuss the provision of air defense and other weapons.
This phone call took place amid reports that the U.S. Department of Defense had suspended shipments of air defense missiles and precision munitions promised to Ukraine, due to concerns that U.S. weapons stockpiles had become too depleted.
Following these reports, President Zelensky wrote on X (formerly Twitter), "I had a very important and productive conversation with the U.S. President," adding, "We discussed air defense opportunities and agreed to cooperate on strengthening the protection of our skies."
He continued, "We also agreed to hold meetings between our teams," and said, "We had detailed discussions about defense industry capabilities and joint production. We are ready to pursue direct projects with the United States, and we consider security to be extremely important, especially regarding drones and related technologies."
