Germany Considers Supporting Ukraine with Patriot System Instead of US
The German government has announced that it is considering supporting Ukraine's Patriot air defense system by providing funding in place of the United States.
On July 4 (local time), according to foreign media, German government spokesperson Steffen Kornelius stated, "One of the options to fill the gap in Ukraine's air defense network is to purchase the Patriot system from the United States and then send it to Ukraine," adding, "We are focusing discussions on this issue."
Previously, the German daily Bild reported that Ukraine had requested assistance from Germany after failing to procure the Patriot system directly from the United States.
The price of a single Patriot system is known to be approximately $1 billion (1.36 trillion won). The system is manufactured by the American defense company Raytheon Technologies, and transactions require approval from the U.S. government.
