Gwangjin District Makes Yangkkochi Street Safer with Pedestrian Environment Improvement Project
Installation of Pedestrian Paths,
Road Repairs and Repaving
On July 4, Gwangjin District in Seoul announced that it has improved the pedestrian environment in the area of Dongil-ro 18-gil and Achasan-ro 30-gil, known as Yangkkochi Street.
Yangkkochi Street is an area where Chinese students from Konkuk University and Sejong University, as well as Chinese residents, began living in the early 1990s. The introduction of China's yangkkochi (lamb skewers) culture naturally led to the formation of a commercial district, and now about 70 restaurants are operating there. The unique culture and delicious food have made it a popular local attraction for people of all ages.
However, concerns about safety accidents have persisted due to narrow roads, parking issues, and outdated traffic facilities. As a place with heavy pedestrian and vehicle traffic, the need to improve the pedestrian environment has been continuously raised for many years.
In response, the district invested approximately 1.1 billion won to enhance pedestrian safety. Starting with a design service in 2023, the project included a resident briefing session, a review of traffic safety facilities, and the commencement of construction, which was completed last month.
A total of 840 meters was renovated, covering 620 meters along Yangkkochi Street and 220 meters along Achasan-ro 30-gil. The district designated the area as a pedestrian-priority road, installed pedestrian and intersection delineators, repaired and repaved the roads, created four new crosswalks, installed 14 traffic safety signs, and improved road markings to ensure both safety and comfort.
