Daegu-Gyeongbuk Free Economic Zone Authority Breaks Ground on 15.5 Billion KRW 'Food Tech Research Support Center' in Pohang
The Daegu-Gyeongbuk Free Economic Zone Authority (Commissioner Kim Byungsam) held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Food Tech Research Support Center at the Pohang Convergence Technology Industrial Complex in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Free Economic Zone on July 3, 2025.
Approximately 200 people attended the event, including Joo Woncheol, Director of Food Industry Policy at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs; Yang Geumhee, Vice Governor for Economic Affairs of North Gyeongsang Province; Lee Kangdeok, Mayor of Pohang; Kim Byungsam, Commissioner of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Free Economic Zone Authority; Jyoti Basheen, Executive Managing Director of NSF Asia Pacific; and representatives from related organizations.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the Food Tech Research Support Center is taking place at the Pohang Convergence Technology Industrial Complex.
View original imageThe Food Tech Research Support Center is a facility designed to support the demonstration and certification of new technologies in the food tech sector. Its goal is to commercialize food robots through data-driven robot demonstration support and the advancement of smart kitchen technologies.
This project was selected as a public offering project by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs in April 2024. From 2024 to 2026, a total of 15.5 billion KRW will be invested to establish the center on a 6,637 square meter site within the Pohang Convergence Technology Industrial Complex.
The Pohang Convergence Technology Industrial Complex, where the Food Tech Research Support Center will be located, has been designated as a specialized zone for small and medium-sized research and development and as a national advanced strategic industry cluster in the bio sector. Currently, the Green Vaccine Demonstration Support Center, the Membrane Protein Research Institute, and the Pohang Knowledge Industry Center are operating there.
The 'Green Bio Venture Campus,' which was selected as a public offering project by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, began construction in December 2024. Preparations are also underway for the establishment of the Animal Pharmaceutical Production Center, the Marine Biomedical Demonstration Center, and the Digital Incubation Center.
Kim Byungsam, Commissioner of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Free Economic Zone Authority, stated, "We will actively support the Food Tech Research Support Center so that it can become a leading advanced research facility in the food robot industry, and we will make even greater efforts to ensure that the Pohang Convergence Technology Industrial Complex becomes a forward base for future core industries."
