This year, the heatwave began earlier than usual, and strong heat is forecast to continue through July and August, accompanied by high temperatures.
In response, Jeonnam Province has secured an additional 2 billion won in contingency funds, separate from the 1.7 billion won in the main budget for this year, to expand support for high-temperature stress relievers to a total of 3.7 billion won.
The support targets livestock farms vulnerable to heatwaves, including those raising chickens, ducks, and pigs, as well as Korean beef cattle, dairy cows, and honeybees. As of July 2, a provisional tally shows that approximately 34,000 livestock have died in the region.
Jeonnam Province plans to quickly supply high-temperature stress relievers to livestock farms through each city and county by the end of this month.
Park Hyunsik, Director of the Agriculture and Livestock Food Bureau of Jeonnam Province, stated, "As heatwaves become more frequent and intense due to climate change, both prevention and swift response are crucial," and urged, "We ask farmers to thoroughly manage and prevent damage in advance."
Meanwhile, Jeonnam Province has conducted pre-inspections of vulnerable farms to prepare for summer disasters. This year, the province is dedicating a total of 16.6 billion won to six projects aimed at preventing livestock damage from summer disasters: 1 billion won for new facilities to prevent livestock heatwave damage, 10 billion won for livestock disaster insurance premiums, 1.7 billion won for high-temperature stress relievers, 300 million won for roof heat-blocking material for livestock barns, 2.7 billion won for feed efficiency improvement agents, and 900 million won for ventilator support for dairy farms.
