Gwangju District Prosecutors Indict 30 Drug Offenders in First Half of Year... 17 Detained
The Anti-Corruption and Violent Crime Division of the Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office brought 30 individuals involved in drug smuggling and distribution to trial in the first half of this year. Of these, 17 were indicted and detained.
According to the legal community on July 1, the prosecution indicted several illegal foreign residents, including Thai nationals, who smuggled yaba and methamphetamine disguised as snacks and nutritional supplements via air express cargo in December last year. Domestic suppliers who distributed or delivered the drugs, as well as users such as entertainment workers, students, and self-employed individuals, were also indicted. The seized drugs were valued at 355 million won, an amount sufficient for approximately 30,000 simultaneous doses.
Although the suspects attempted to evade investigation by using Telegram and burner phones, the prosecution, in cooperation with related agencies such as Gwangju Main Customs and by utilizing forensic equipment, succeeded in apprehending them.
A prosecution official stated, "Drug smuggling will inevitably be detected," and added, "We will do our utmost to maintain the charges to ensure heavy sentences."
