Gwangsan District in Gwangju Requests Reconsideration of Singa 2nd Middle School Cancellation
City Office of Education Cancels New School Plan Due to Declining Student Population
Gwangsan District: "Do Not Ignore Residents' Hopes Beyond Just a School"
Gwangsan District in Gwangju has officially requested a reconsideration of the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education's plan to cancel the establishment of Singa 2nd Middle School (tentative name).
According to Gwangsan District on June 30, the Office of Education recently sent an official document stating its intention to cancel the establishment of Singa 2nd Middle School, which was planned for the redevelopment area of Singa-dong. The school was originally scheduled to open this year, but due to delays in the redevelopment project, there have been concerns that the opening could be postponed until 2030. The Office of Education is reported to have determined that, by that time, a decline in the school-age population would eliminate the need for a new school.
In response, Gwangsan District issued a public statement on the same day, expressing its difficulty in accepting the Office of Education's decision. The district pointed out, "In addition to redevelopment delays and changes in the school-age population, the voices of residents who hope for better educational conditions and improved school advancement opportunities for their children must also be heard."
Gwangsan District further stated, "This school establishment is not simply about building an educational facility, but about creating a hub space that connects the community and the school for mutual growth." The district urged, "We ask the Office of Education to respond to the earnest demands of local residents and reopen a forum for sincere discussions." The district added, "Even if there are difficulties, we believe solutions can be found through communication with citizens."
