Busan Regional Office of Patriots and Veterans Affairs Selects General Whitcomb Statue as "Memorial Facility of the Month" for July
The Busan Regional Office of Patriots and Veterans Affairs selects and promotes a "Memorial Facility of the Month" each month to raise public interest in memorial facilities and to spread a culture of honoring veterans in daily life.
For July 2025, the selected memorial facility is the "General Whitcomb Statue," located within Peace Park in Nam-gu, Busan.
This statue was established to commemorate the contributions of General Whitcomb, who provided military supplies such as tents, food, and clothing to 30,000 victims of the massive fire at Busan Station in 1953. The statue was built through a citywide fundraising campaign in which 30,000 citizens each voluntarily donated 10,000 won. It was designated as a national memorial facility by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs on November 1, 2024.
