Response Guidelines for Fires Caused by Lithium Batteries
The Steel Resources Win-Win Forum is conducting training sessions in four regions across the country to prevent fires caused by foreign substances mixed into steel scrap. The Steel Resources Win-Win Forum is a consultative body established under the leadership of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, where the private and public sectors cooperate to enhance the safety and resource circulation efficiency of the steel scrap industry.
On June 27, the Steel Resources Win-Win Forum held a "Fire Response Training for Waste Lithium Batteries in the Steel Industry" at the Korea Battery Recycling Resources Association Anseong Office located in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province. This was the first session of a series of trainings to be held sequentially in four regions nationwide, and was attended by representatives from steel scrap processing companies and steelmakers in the Gyeongin and Chungcheong regions.

Practical training focused on real fire cases from industrial sites was also provided.
The training covered the following topics: the structure and explosion characteristics of lithium-ion batteries; fire mechanisms that occur when waste lithium batteries are mixed in; precautions for sorting, transporting, and storing scrap; and fire prevention and initial response guidelines. After the training, participants toured the battery exhibition hall to observe various types of lithium-ion batteries and collection technologies firsthand.
An official from the Steel Resources Win-Win Forum Secretariat stated, "This training in the Gyeongin and Chungcheong regions has significantly raised safety awareness throughout the steel industry," and added, "We will continue to conduct training sessions in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk, Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam, and Honam regions as planned, making every effort to prevent industrial accidents caused by the mixing of waste lithium batteries."
