Ansan City to Establish 24-Hour Emergency Abdominal Surgery System with No Service Gaps
Three Medical Institutions Selected for Emergency Abdominal Surgery Pilot Project
Sarang Hospital, Hansarang Hospital, and Chihang Hospital
Ansan City in Gyeonggi Province is establishing a round-the-clock "emergency abdominal surgery" system with no service gaps.
On June 25, Ansan City announced that three local medical institutions have been selected for the "Pilot Project to Support Emergency Abdominal Surgery in Surgical Hospitals," organized by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. The selected institutions are Sarang Hospital of Chilseok Medical Foundation (Sangnok-gu), Hansarang Hospital of Seojeon Medical Foundation (Sangnok-gu), and Chihang Hospital (Danwon-gu).
This project is being promoted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare to eliminate gaps in emergency surgery by maintaining the infrastructure of surgical hospitals capable of providing 24-hour emergency abdominal surgery, facilitating emergency patient transfers, and establishing cooperative systems with other medical institutions. The government aims to create a system that enables surgery for severe surgical emergency patients, such as those with abdominal diseases, within the golden hour.
The selection criteria for the project targeted small and medium-sized hospitals that meet the following requirements: providing 24-hour on-call services and performing at least 50 emergency abdominal surgeries annually among general hospitals and hospitals; maintaining at least three board-certified surgeons; securing the capacity and infrastructure for 24-hour on-call operation and emergency abdominal surgery; and establishing and continuously operating cooperative systems with higher-level hospitals and local clinics to strengthen response capabilities.
With this selection, the three medical institutions will participate in the pilot project from June 30, 2025, to December 31, 2028. These hospitals will establish and maintain a 24-hour emergency surgery system, secure dedicated surgeons and personnel for emergency surgeries, and ensure the continuous operation of medical infrastructure such as operating rooms.
The city expects that, once the emergency surgery system is in place, emergency patients will be able to receive prompt emergency abdominal surgery within the region without having to be transferred to other areas or large hospitals.
